[Guide Spotlight] Samaanta: Indian Cooking and Culture in the Bay Area
Born and raised in Chennai, India, Samaanta grew up surrounded by the rich flavors and traditions of home-cooked Indian food. Indian festivals were especially memorable, as family gatherings centered around sharing delicious meals. These experiences sparked her lifelong love for Indian cuisine and the joy of connecting with others through food.
After moving to the Bay Area, Samaanta longed for the sense of connection she had back home. This led her to The Moonlight Collective, where she now invites locals from her neighborhood to connect, share stories, and celebrate culture through food. Her hands-on cooking workshops bring the flavors and traditions of India to life, fostering community through a shared culinary journey.
“I believe food is more than just sustenance—it’s a cultural exchange. Each dish tells a story, and I love bringing those stories to life during my workshops.” Samaanta says.
Her workshops stand out for their focus on experiential learning. Participants cook alongside her, making mistakes, learning, and gaining confidence. This hands-on approach not only helps them master techniques but also deepens their connection to Indian cuisine and culture.
“I strive to create a warm, inclusive space where everyone feels comfortable,” Samaanta explains. “Whether you’re an experienced cook or just starting out, I want people to leave feeling inspired and excited to recreate these dishes at home.”
For Samaanta, community is at the heart of her Moonlight Collective experience. Her workshops go beyond recipes, creating connections between people from all walks of life who come together to share their stories and experiences.
Her advice? “Come with an open mind and a willingness to explore. Indian cuisine is vast and diverse, and the workshops are designed to be both educational and fun.”
With every session, Samaanta builds bridges between people in her neighborhood, using the universal language of food to foster connection—one dish at a time.
